Okay, I think this is a word...
Is there a term for when you use a subcategory of a thing, and compare it to its umbrella heading as a way of explaining how the umbrella thing works?
I'm writing an essay on visual communication, and I'm exploring map making as a way of looking into how graphic design in general works. So I'm treating maps as a ... something. I'm sure there's a word for this.
