After watching Hellboy 2 and more recently The Middleman, I have a huge hankering to run a modern fantasy rpg with some people. By modern fantasy, I mean a game set in the modern world, but with elements of fantasy like magic, critters, whatever.
The idea of the real world overlaying a hidden world of maaaaaagic has always fascinated me as a story element, but for some reason 'real world' games are often harder to run than fantasy games. The reason for this in my mind is that the real world can often give GMs a sense of restriction, of being hemmed in by having to get stuff right like city descriptions and so on.
At this stage I'm tinkering with the idea of running an In Nomine game, possibly with some tweaks. In offical In Nomine canon, there's not much in the way of a hidden world, as such, other than Heaven and Hell since all the magical critters got their asses kicked back in medieval times. I'd be interested in running a game where this purge never happened, where angels have to police the magical world as well as the physical one.
I'd dial the number of demons back to the third that fell according to Relevations, and bump them up a notch in power so the average demon is stronger than the average angel. I want demonic encounters to be scary.
Hrmmm. Methinks its time to write up some setting notes!
