When I was first diagnosed with The Diabeetus, and being given the medication that would be my twice daily ritual for the foreseeable future, the good doctor told me that I might be able to one day stop taking said medication, should my weight come off and kickstart my rogue pancreas back into operation.
Well, 30 kg later, I started to notice that, usually between breakfast and lunch, I would get the Dreaded Shakes. Diabetics get the Dreaded Shakes when their blood sugar falls too low. A healthy range is usually between 6 and 8 on the handy little blood reader gizmo. (When I was first diagnosed at the doctors, I had a blood sugar level of 23. Whoops.)
But anyway, the Dreaded Shakes is just like when you exercise hardcore on an empty stomach, and suddenly you feel sick and dizzy and your strength goes down to that of a newborn kitten and you can't concentrate on a damn thing. Just like a normal person it goes away pretty quickly after eating a bit of chocolate or a sandwich, much quicker in fact than the time it takes to metabolise the food, which I've always found interesting.
Moral of the story; because I was getting the shakes much more often, I decided to cut my pill intake in half and just take them in the morning. After a week of testing my blood levels every day, it's still well within the healthy range, which is awesome, plus I hardly ever get the shakes any more. So, huzzah! My weight loss has started to have a positive effect on my unruly pancreas. I'm hoping if progress continues, I might even be able to go off the medication altogether.
