Things of interest...
1) Went on a Marae trip with C4C this weekend, and my mentee impressed the socks off me by standing up and doing a karakia. We had a really awesome time over the two days. The boy and I have hatched a massively epic plan, which the course leaders are happy to help us out with. If we manage to pull this off, I'll have done something really awesome for someone else, and it'll be something to feel pretty proud about. Vague, I know! I'm hugely excited about this but it's the nature of the thing that I can't really talk about it on teh interwebs.
1B) ...something I can talk about is that we're both looking to taking Te Reo classes at the start of next year. My mentee is Maori and feels pretty strongly about learning his own language, which is something I obviously want to encourage him towards, so I'm looking into free classes around Wellington. Hopefully there's no age limit on them and we can both go along. I've always been a bit jealous of people who speak more than one language, plus I figure I might as well learn one that would be useful for where I live. In the meantime I have a lot of catching up to do on my mentee, so I'm checking out some online courses. I wasn't using that minuscule amount of spare time anyway!
2) Today I met Anne Marie, mum of a guy who was close to Tamsyn and many others in Wellington. He passed away a couple of years ago. We had brunch at Fidel's and it was very emotional and fascinating in a way, for me, being the outsider and watching all this history and emotion being shared and celebrated. It was sort of raw but also wonderful and warm and intimate. Anne Marie gave me a sense of who her son was and that was cool.
3) This coming weekend is Hamilton Trip of Doom! Black jeans and bogan bands and inadvisable amounts of alcohol are going to feature strongly, as well as catching up with long time friends and doing my own celebration of shared history and putting my arm around various luckless, undeserving people and saying things like ýou're mah bruva!' Ahhh good times. My only regret is that the schedule is so stupidly tight that I won't have time to see half the people that I want to.
4) So much going on! I sent Mark a bunch of comic things to look over, so I'm planning on nailing out a rough overview of an idea with him soon for the sci fi story. I have a free eye check and podiatrist visit to organise (diabeetus is good for something at least) as well as people to chase up over freelance projects and taxes to work out and design tutorials to do. Plus very likely half a dozen other things that escape me right now.
5) There's lots of other interesting things to talk about but I'll get onto that next time as it sounds like Delicious Things are being made ready. I flee!
