Say It With Runes

So an amusing idea that I posted to a friend's facebook update has snowballed into a semi serious email discussion amongst The Girls and I about getting a tattoo. At this stage it's possible that either one of The Girls or myself or possibly even both of us could end up having it done.

The actual idea is deeply nerdy but also very amusing. Basically it's 'AND MY AXE!' in Dwarfish runes. Thanks to the internets, an online translator gives us a rough idea of what such a tattoo might look like...

If I was going to get this done, I'd go for black ink, probably slightly blockier runes than the ones above, and I'd put it on the inside of my arm, below the elbow area which is fairly prime real estate for a first tattoo. I don't know how seriously my friend is considering getting this done, but I certainly am!

...of course I also have to decide if first I get the autobot symbol done on my shoulder.

Curious. The site I was shown was this one:

http://derhobbit-film.de/rune_generator.shtml#rune

...and now that I look at it again, that might just use the old FUTHARK alphabet. I'll check out that link you sent me and let the others know. Thanks!

Huh! Further investigation and comparison tells me that the Dwarvish runes you linked me to are actually closer to the Elder Futhark runes than whatever the hell it is that we were using before. Weeeeeird.

I've got what happened! The one Dan posted is in Cirth, which is the Dwarvish rune language used in LOTR (as seen on Balin's tomb). It wasn't used in The Hobbit because Tolkien hadn't written it yet, he used old English runes for the map. I just downloaded the font you linked him too, and put 'and my axe' in, then compared it to the same quote in the rune generator using old English runes rather than Cirth, which was what I was using before. Personally I like the idea of using a language Tolkien wrote himself. It's not going to be authentic anyway because 'and my axe' is a movie! quote, not a book!quote.
