Explosions In The Sky

Yesterday was, by and large, taking into account all considerations, weighing up the pros and cons, measuring the yardsticks, totally awesome.

Had a nice catch up with Annah who was down visiting people, and we sat out in the sun in the middle of town, sipping beverages with Craig and then later Sarah and Misc German Friend whose name I forget. It was an amazingly beautiful spring day and I wore a teeshirt, waistcoat and dress jacket with my usual black jeans. Which was perfect attire for the weather right up until, this being Wellington, everything suddenly turned to poos.

Image: proof that the day was awesome, dammit. Also part of Annah's head.

For a while it was all up in the air as to whether we were going to get any fireworks display in town, as a storm front was barreling its way into the region and suddenly it was cold wind gusts and fat drops of rain, but the main brunt of the crappy weather managed to hold off and a bunch of us went down to the water front and watched 12 minutes of hugely awesome pyrotechnics. There were huge planets that burst out from nowhere, complete with rings, plus gentle golden rains (tee hee), falling stars, multicoloured 3D globes that filled the sky, dazzling rockets and so much more. I now know what you get for 190,000 dollars worth of fireworks. Turns out it's five tons of explosives.

The size of the crowd was decent, though the fairground setup was pretty basic. Luckily there was the prerequisite battered things on sticks to be had, and I made sure to sample the local delicacies of 'chips with cheese-dog covered in sauce and mustard'. I swear that this was some kind of native trick to see whether I'd eat something dubious, but I wolfed it down and earned the respect of the trailer chieftain.

My only real gripe was that the whole affair was managed by Classic Hits FM, who treated us to a stunningly loud Katie Perry blasting out across the crowd straight after the fireworks were over, though I guess at least it helped getting everyone home quickly.

Also I am now officially Tamsyn's longest running boyfriend. This is pretty cool and made the night even more awesome. Luckily she has still not seen through my facade!
