Progress

I got a phone call this morning from R*, who is one of the two authors working on the book that I could be illustrating for. So, the following developments!

Firstly, they've talked to three cartoonists so far, and I fit the bill the most closely in regards to what they're looking for. R's co author will be talking to the final cartoonist today, but it's looking very promising.

I was very candid about the fact that I haven't been published before, which was fine since they're both relatively new authors too, and that I'd contact her again after meeting up with my old tutor Mark tomorrow morning, to discuss lump sum payments vs royalties, etc. I definitely got the impression that they would prefer me to accept royalties... which the more I think about, the better that option seems anyway. Firstly I wouldn't be getting paid for 6 months or so in any case (more on that in a moment), and secondly while it's more of a gamble, if the book does well (her last book sold a few thousand copies in NZ and this time they're also publishing overseas), I could stand to do fairly decently from royalties, on top of keeping the property rights to the work itself.

The actual workload? SIXTY FOUR ILLUSTRATIONS. HOLY BALLS. They expect the work to be over a six month period, with articles coming in over that time as they get written. So, if all goes well, I'll have an illustrated book to my name, and hopefully a fairly decent payoff for my troubles. Though frankly having this on my resume would be freaking awesome anyway.

Only potential difficulty I see is when I get other work over that period, but ehh I can deal. I've been a full time design student and I know how much grind that is. So if I have to do these extra drawings while I'm also working during the day, no worries choomba.

*I figure keeping things a little vague is probably a good idea.
